Homeland Security suspends TSA PreCheck and Global Entry airport security programs

Airport Security Programs Paused. Travelers Will Wait Longer. They Always Have.

The Department of Homeland Security has suspended TSA PreCheck and Global Entry programs, which allowed pre-approved travelers to move through airport security more quickly. The suspension affects millions of enrolled travelers who will now need to use standard security screening processes.

Airport security has been disrupted before: after 9/11, all security was rebuilt from scratch (2001-2002). During government shutdowns, TSA operations were affected (2013, 2018-2019). Before PreCheck existed (launched 2011), all travelers waited in the same lines. The average additional wait time is typically 15-30 minutes during peak hours - inconvenient, not catastrophic.

Whether you arrive at airports earlier for upcoming trips. Whether you check program status before traveling. Your choice to be patient with TSA agents who didn't make this decision. Whether you let this ruin a trip that's still happening.

If you're traveling soon: add 30-60 minutes to your airport arrival time. If you're not traveling: this requires zero action from you. No need to panic-check your travel plans from six months ago.
