Labor Secretary Resigns Amid Scandals, and F.B.I. Director Sues Over Drinking Claims

Two Officials Exit Washington Under Fire. The Chairs Will Be Filled by Thursday.

The U.S. Labor Secretary has resigned following unspecified scandals, creating a vacancy in the Cabinet. Separately, the FBI Director has filed a lawsuit related to allegations about drinking, suggesting a contentious departure rather than a quiet one. Both stories represent senior federal officials leaving or contesting their positions simultaneously.

Cabinet resignations under scandal are as old as the Cabinet itself. Albert Fall resigned as Interior Secretary in 1923 (Teapot Dome). Resignations amid scandal under recent administrations: multiple per term, across both parties. The average presidential Cabinet sees 1–2 scandal-adjacent departures per year. FBI Director disputes are also not new: James Comey was fired in 2017, William Sessions resigned under pressure in 1993. The institution survives. It always has.

Whether you follow every twist of the lawsuit. Whether you read six opinion pieces about what it "means." Whether you check if either role affects a policy area relevant to your life or work.

Awareness only, unless you work in labor policy or federal law enforcement. Two chairs are empty. Two chairs will be filled. You may have no opinion on who sits in them.
