China restricts exports to 40 Japanese entities with ties to military

China Blocks Exports to 40 Japanese Defense Firms. Trade Wars Use Different Weapons.

China announced export restrictions targeting 40 Japanese entities with military connections, escalating economic tensions between the two nations. The move appears to be retaliation for Japan's own export controls on dual-use technology to China.

Economic warfare through export controls has deep precedent: The U.S. restricted steel exports to Japan in 1940, contributing to Pearl Harbor. During the Cold War, COCOM restricted technology exports to Soviet bloc countries for decades. More recently, the U.S. has restricted semiconductor exports to China since 2018, and China has restricted rare earth exports multiple times since 2010. These measures typically escalate in cycles before eventually normalizing through negotiation or alternative supply chains.

Whether you follow the daily moves in this chess game (you don't need to). If you work in affected industries, understanding your company's supply chain exposure. Recognizing this as part of broader US-China-Japan triangular tensions that will likely persist for years.

Unless you work in defense manufacturing or semiconductor supply chains: awareness only. This is part of a longer strategic competition that will play out over years, not days.
