Putin’s Forces Are Barely Inching Along on the Battlefield

Russia's Slow Advance in Ukraine Continues. The War Enters Its Fourth Year.

Russian forces continue to make incremental territorial gains in eastern Ukraine, advancing at a slow pace along the front lines. The battlefield situation remains largely attritional, with neither side achieving decisive breakthroughs. This characterization reflects the broader stalemate dynamic that has defined much of the conflict since 2022.

Slow, grinding attrition is historically the norm in modern land wars, not the exception. WWI's Western Front saw advances measured in yards over months. The Iran-Iraq War (1980–1988) lasted eight years with minimal net territorial change and roughly one million dead. Even WWII's Eastern Front — the largest land campaign in history — had prolonged periods of stalemate. The Russia-Ukraine front line has shifted less than 30 miles in either direction for most of 2023–2024. Headlines declaring forces are "barely inching" have appeared with near-identical wording for two years running.

Whether you follow daily front-line updates (you probably shouldn't — they change little and cost you much). If you have family or connections in Ukraine, checking on them directly. If you donate to humanitarian organizations, continuing to do so regardless of battlefield news.

Unless you are a military strategist, Ukrainian, or Russian, this is awareness only. Daily battlefield reporting on this conflict has proven a poor predictor of outcomes. Permission granted to read this once and not refresh the map.
