UK loses measles elimination status
UK Measles Cases Rise Above WHO Threshold. Vaccines Still Work When Used.
What Happened
The World Health Organization has withdrawn the UK's measles elimination status due to sustained transmission of the disease for more than 12 months. The UK had achieved elimination status in 2017 but cases have risen due to declining vaccination rates, particularly following COVID-19 disruptions and vaccine hesitancy.
Historical Context
The UK previously lost measles elimination status in 2019 before regaining it. Other developed nations have faced similar challenges: the US lost elimination status briefly in 2019 due to outbreaks in unvaccinated communities. Measles vaccination rates of 95% are needed for herd immunity - the UK's rate has dropped to around 85% for the two-dose MMR vaccine. Before vaccination, measles killed 2.6 million children annually worldwide; deaths dropped 73% between 2000-2018 due to vaccination programs.
What's In Your Control
Whether you and your children are up to date on MMR vaccinations. Whether you consult your GP about vaccination schedules rather than social media. Whether you support public health messaging in your community.
Does This Require Action?
Check your family's vaccination records. If you have young children or are planning children, confirm MMR vaccination status with your healthcare provider. This is a solvable problem with individual action.
