At Least 15 Have Died on Tahoe-Area Slopes This Year

15 Die Skiing Near Tahoe This Season. Mountains Remain Dangerous.

Fifteen people have died in skiing and snowboarding accidents in the Lake Tahoe area during the current winter season. The deaths occurred across multiple ski resorts and backcountry areas in the region.

Skiing deaths in the U.S. average 38-40 per year nationwide across all ski areas, according to the National Ski Areas Association. Tahoe typically sees 2-4 deaths per season. Colorado averages 6-8 deaths annually. The death rate is roughly 0.5 per million skier visits. More people die from lightning strikes (20 per year) than skiing accidents nationally.

Whether you ski at all. Staying on marked runs versus backcountry skiing. Wearing helmets (reduces head injury risk by 35%). Skiing within your skill level. Checking avalanche conditions before backcountry trips. Whether you ski alone or with others.

If you ski in Tahoe: increased caution warranted, especially in backcountry. If you don't ski: awareness only. Permission granted to continue your winter activities as planned.
