With Fuel Running Out and Canadian Flights Suspended, Cuba’s Tourism Is Collapsing

Cuba's Tourism Industry Fails. The Island Remains.

Cuba is experiencing severe fuel shortages that have led Canadian airlines to suspend flights to the island. The tourism industry, a critical source of foreign currency for Cuba's economy, is collapsing as a result of these logistical failures and reduced international access.

Cuba's economy has faced repeated crises: the 1990s "Special Period" after Soviet collapse saw GDP fall 35%, tourism eventually recovered by 2000s. The 1960s U.S. embargo forced similar adaptations. Caribbean tourism is cyclical - Haiti's industry collapsed in 2010 (earthquake), Dominican Republic's survived and thrived. Small island economies historically survive through fishing, agriculture, and remittances when tourism fails. Cuba has endured 60+ years of economic isolation and adapted repeatedly.

Whether you had Cuba vacation plans to reconsider. Whether you send money to Cuban relatives if you have them. Your understanding that economic systems can be more fragile than they appear.

Unless you're Cuban, have Cuban family, or work in Caribbean tourism: awareness only. This is Cuba adapting to economic reality, as it has many times before.
