With Latest Rollback, the U.S. Essentially Has No Clean-Car Rules

U.S. Reverses Vehicle Emissions Standards. Cars Will Pollute More. Physics Remains Unimpressed.

The U.S. government has rolled back federal clean car regulations, effectively eliminating national standards for vehicle emissions. This reverses previous policies aimed at reducing automotive pollution and improving fuel efficiency standards.

Vehicle emission standards have been political ping-pong balls for decades: Carter created CAFE standards (1975), Reagan relaxed them (1981), Clinton tightened them (1993), Bush relaxed them (2001), Obama tightened them (2009), Trump relaxed them (2017-2021), Biden tightened them (2021). California has maintained separate, stricter standards since 1970 regardless of federal policy. About 40% of Americans live in states that follow California's standards, creating a de facto national market for cleaner cars.

Your next car purchase. Research vehicles with better fuel efficiency or electric options. Support businesses and politicians who prioritize environmental policy if this matters to you. Move to a state with stricter standards if climate policy is a priority in your life decisions.

This affects long-term air quality and climate policy. If you care about environmental issues: awareness and potential action through voting and purchasing decisions. If not: this changes little about your daily life in the short term.
