China's Xi meets Taiwan opposition leader ahead of key summit with Trump

China's Xi Meets Taiwan Opposition Leader. Diplomatic Theater Before Trump Summit.

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with a Taiwanese opposition leader in advance of an upcoming summit with President-elect Trump. The meeting represents continued diplomatic maneuvering around Taiwan's status as leadership transitions occur.

Cross-strait diplomatic meetings are routine political theater. Xi has met with Taiwanese opposition figures before (2015 meeting with then-President Ma Ying-jeou in Singapore). Trump previously took congratulatory calls from Taiwan's president in 2016, causing brief diplomatic friction. US-China-Taiwan dynamics have remained fundamentally unchanged for decades despite regular diplomatic posturing from all sides.
