A 13-year-old dies after participating in a Benadryl TikTok 'challenge'

Child Dies from Online Challenge. Parents Face an Ancient Problem with New Tools.

A 13-year-old died after participating in a social media challenge involving taking excessive amounts of Benadryl (diphenhydramine), an over-the-counter antihistamine that can cause dangerous effects in high doses.

Dangerous youth challenges predate social media by centuries. In the 1920s, college students participated in goldfish swallowing contests. The 1960s saw phone booth stuffing. The 1990s brought choking games. What's new is the speed and scale of viral spread, but adolescent risk-taking and peer pressure are as old as civilization. Diphenhydramine overdoses cause hallucinations, seizures, and cardiac arrest - effects that have been documented in medical literature since the 1940s.

Whether you discuss social media risks with children in your care. Whether you monitor what apps children use and understand their features. Whether you keep medications locked away. Whether you know the warning signs of substance misuse. Whether you create environments where children feel safe discussing peer pressure.

If you have children or work with them: this warrants a conversation about social media challenges and medication safety. Parents may want to review their medicine cabinet security and discuss how online peer pressure works.
