Denmark holds early elections spurred by Trump's threats to take Greenland

Denmark Calls Election Over Greenland Talk. Politicians Respond to Words With Words.

Denmark announced early parliamentary elections following recent statements from Donald Trump about acquiring Greenland. The Danish government cited the need for a clear mandate regarding Greenland's status and Denmark's sovereignty over the territory.

Greenland purchase attempts: The U.S. tried to buy Greenland in 1867 and 1946 (both rejected). Trump also floated this idea in 2019, calling it "essentially a large real estate deal." Greenland has been a Danish territory since 1721, gained home rule in 1979, and expanded self-governance in 2009. Early elections in response to foreign pressure are common - see UK's 1974 "Who governs Britain?" election during strikes, or various snap elections during international crises.
