Trump administration moves to erase Jan. 6 riot convictions for seditious conspiracy

Trump Pardons January 6th Convictions. Power Changes, Justice Gets Rewritten.

The Trump administration is moving to overturn convictions related to the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot, including those for seditious conspiracy. This affects hundreds of cases where individuals were prosecuted for their role in the events at the U.S. Capitol.

Presidential pardons reversing predecessor's prosecutions have historical precedent: Carter pardoned Vietnam draft resisters (1977), Ford pardoned Nixon (1974), and Jefferson pardoned those convicted under the Alien and Sedition Acts (1801). Political prosecutions and their subsequent reversals follow the rhythm of American power transitions. The seditious conspiracy statute itself has been used sparingly - major cases include the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing conspirators and 1980s Puerto Rican independence activists.

Whether you engage with political commentary about this decision. Whether you focus your civic energy on local issues where individual votes matter more. Whether you maintain relationships across political divides in your personal life.

This is the new political reality. Unless you work in law enforcement or criminal justice: awareness only. Permission granted to focus on things you can actually influence.
