India Built the World’s Back Office. A.I. Is Starting to Shrink It.

AI Automates Back-Office Work in India. Technology Changes How We Work Again.

Artificial intelligence is beginning to automate many back-office and customer service jobs that have been outsourced to India over the past several decades. Companies are using AI tools to handle tasks previously done by human workers in call centers, data processing, and administrative roles.

This is the third major wave of work disruption in 50 years: Manufacturing moved to Asia (1970s-1990s), then service jobs followed (1990s-2010s), now AI automates both. Previous disruptions: The industrial revolution eliminated 90% of agricultural jobs over 150 years, yet unemployment didn't permanently spike. The telephone eliminated human switchboard operators (hundreds of thousands of jobs) in the 1960s-70s. India's IT services sector employed about 5 million people as of 2023, representing roughly 0.4% of India's total workforce.

If you work in routine data processing, customer service, or administrative roles: time to develop skills that complement rather than compete with AI. Learning to prompt and work alongside AI tools rather than against them. Supporting policies for worker retraining in your community.

If you're in affected industries: start skill development now. For everyone else: awareness of ongoing technological change affecting global work patterns. No need to panic about AI generally - this is one sector adapting.
