The divorce between the U.S. and WHO is final this week. Or is it?

U.S. Exits WHO This Week. International Health Agency Continues Without Its Largest Funder.

The United States' withdrawal from the World Health Organization becomes official this week, following the Trump administration's announcement. The U.S. was the WHO's largest financial contributor, providing approximately 16% of its budget through assessed and voluntary contributions.

The U.S. has threatened WHO withdrawal before - Congress withheld funding in the 1990s over abortion policies, and the Bush administration clashed with WHO over tobacco control. Other major powers have continued global health work through alternative mechanisms: the EU, UK, and Germany increased WHO funding after the U.S. announcement. Historical precedent shows international organizations adapt - the League of Nations continued for years after major powers left, and the UN has functioned through various member disputes since 1945.

Whether you support international health cooperation through other channels (donations to Doctors Without Borders, UNICEF, or direct aid). How you evaluate political promises about rejoining international agreements. Your personal health preparations, which don't depend on WHO membership.

Awareness only. Global health systems will adapt with or without U.S. participation. Individual health decisions remain unchanged regardless of WHO membership status.
